Part 3 of a four part series by Kim Ades, MBA
Sales, Pricing, Delivery and Sustainabilty -
The Answer for Coaches
Part 3: Delivery - Being Fully Equipped to Coach Do you really know enough about your clients to coach them successfully? How? Is a one hour conversation really sufficient to gain accurate insight into your client's beliefs, values, and thinking patterns? Is this kind of communication enough for you to detect unintentional self-deception or identify instances of selective memory? Is your bent for empathy and compassion perhaps a deterrent from getting the real story? How do you build trust with a new coaching client? How long does it take for them to feel completely comfortable revealing all of their challenges AND the skeletons in their closet? What if you are working with someone who is more of a thinker than a talker? That strong, silent type who is not too keen on exposing his or her weaknesses? How do you get a clear picture of what's really going on and what needs your attention first? Many coaches use assessments, with the hope of getting a valid snapshot of a person's character traits or personality. Even if you conduct an assessment or two, does that take into account the variables of mood, situation, and skewed personal reflection? Clearly, great coaches use some other method of data gathering to keep them informed and sharp with every coaching client. Some people call it intuition, some people call it strategic questioning; yet others might call it reading between the lines. We have often heard that coaching is not a science, but more of an art. The question is how do you turn it into an art that has a higher rate of reliability and more consistent, tangible results? What can you do to acquire accurate information that you can use to identify trends and patterns in order to successfully guide and coach your clients? What concrete evidence can you use to demonstrate the impact of your coaching? Consider recommending that your clients keep an online journal of sorts in between phone calls or meetings and share it with you daily or weekly. Provide them with writing assignments that reflect the theme of your coaching session so that they can maintain the momentum of their personal development even after the coaching session is over. This process is even more powerful when you can read their journals as soon as they are written and provide questions or feedback that can be responded to instantly. The more engaging the dialogue, the better and the more valuable information you are gathering for more effective coaching. The insight obtained from the client's journal is outstanding. Limiting beliefs and behavioral challenges become obvious to not only to you, the coach, but to the coaching client as well. Thinking patterns stand out and can even be highlighted to show the client where they keep getting into trouble. The impact on the client is enormous. When a person journals, even if they are journaling without authenticity, a coach can easily read between the lines and identify what needs attention. The information is extremely rich and equips the coach to help the client overcome major obstacles in a consistent and powerful manner. Asking a client to journal is like asking a patient to take an X-ray for an injury. Without this vital piece of information and accurate picture of the problem, treatment may be negligent. A journal provides an accurate blueprint of a person's history, mindset, and intentions...all critical for effective coaching.
