Part 3 of a four part series by Amoráh Ross, MCC and Janet Harvey, MCC
Catapult your Coaching:
Engage with a Mentor Coach Part 3: Value Proposition for Working with a Mentor What is the value proposition of a mentor coach? Have you "lost your shine" as a coach? Over time this can show up as lack of enthusiasm for coming to your coaching sessions, feeling like you've settled into a rut or simply being bored with it all. Are you curious how to catapult your coaching quality and artistry? No matter how much experience you have as a coach, there is always a new horizon to approach and master. In the wise words from George Burns Leonard, the author of Mastery, the journey toward mastery is the destination. This may show up as the ability to ask more succinct, direct or bold questions. It may mean developing your intuition more fully to ask questions sourced from a deeper level of awareness. How do you sustain on-going development? Seeking out advanced coaching skills training is certainly one way; diving into a coach-training program with a different philosophy of coaching than your original training is another way. One of the most powerful ways, however, is to hire and work with a qualified mentor coach who can serve as mirror, guide, and inspiration, supporting the expansion of your skills from where they currently reside to that next horizon of excellence that will benefit you and your clients. How do I choose a mentor coach? Interview several mentor coaches to make sure that your learning, thinking, creating and being style are well supported. For example, if you're a visual learner, you'll want to make sure your mentor coach can use language and provide examples that support you in that realm. What style of mentor will offer you insight beyond your comfort zone? Be sure to seek out a mentor coach who is enough like you that you establish rapport quickly, and look for someone with a style that models the areas in which you want to stretch and grow. If you tend to 'pull your punches' with your clients, you might intentionally hire a mentor coach who is direct enough with you that it makes you slightly uncomfortable, so that you can introduce a new level of directness into your own coaching style. Mentor coaching in the way we're discussing it in this series is a new frontier; up to now, most coaches have thought of mentor coaches as someone who could provide advice on how to attract clients and build a coaching practice. So, how do you find and select a mentor coach to support your coaching competencies? Look for programs that specifically teach mentor-coaching skills that focus on the core coaching competencies. Their websites will most likely list their program graduates so that you can interview a couple of them to find a fit. You can also search the ICF website's coach referral area for coaches who designate mentor coaching as one of their specialties. Calls to Action: Just as we facilitate for clients it is important for you to establish your own measures of success for engaging with a mentor coach. Invest some time before you interview prospective mentor coaches to consider the evidence in your behavior and world view that will indicate high value received from a mentor coach. Here is an example to follow.
