Part 1 of a four part series by Amoráh Ross, MCC and Janet Harvey, MCC
Catapult your Coaching:
Engage with a Mentor Coach Part 1: Definitions and Getting Started Definitions: mentor versus coach and then mentor coach The term 'mentor' comes to us from the Odyssey, an ancient epic poem attributed to the Greek historical figure named Homer. Mentor was the name of a character in the poem entrusted with the care and education of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. Today, when revered corporate leaders retire, they oftentimes serve as mentors to their successors, passing on lessons learned as well as their expertise to ensure smooth transition and continued success for the organization. Over time, these mentors also are referred to as 'coach,' since that term designates a relationship well known and accepted from the sports world. From these origins, among many others, our profession as coaches was born and has evolved into today's paradigm: rather than educator or teacher, 'coach' is a partner serving as deeply curious questioner and dedicated reflector, in a relationship that calls forth the wisdom within a client and inspires innovative solutions for challenges. Building on that premise, consider this philosophy of 'mentor coach': In non-hierarchical partnership, a mentor coach listens for what is present in a coach's skill set in order to facilitate what else is possible. The intent is that, in learning laboratories co-created with the mentor, the coach increases artful application of the entire set of core coaching competencies with excellence, confidence, and competence. Potential benefits from mentor coaching The inherent nature of a professional coach is that of 'life-long learner.' Many of the best coaches continually seek opportunities to learn new skills and techniques to add to their already ample toolkits. The best and the brightest are also committed to always expanding their artful demonstration of the core coaching competencies. What's the pay-off in periodically working with a mentor coach? Identifying personal blind spots that prevent bold curiosity about the client's experience, e.g. making assumptions about the meaning behind a client's words. Or, eliminating formulaic approaches so that coaching sessions can remain fresh and thought provoking for both coach and client. Calls to Action: We will offer you three action items in each segment of the series to support you in stepping toward mentor coaching. The more prepared you are by identifying the highest value development areas, the more empowering will be your experience of working with a mentor coach. Here are the three steps to follow before Part II.
