Part 1 of a four part series by Kim Ades, MBA
What's Journaling Got to
Do With It?
Part 1: Challenge 1 - Coaching with Excellence In December 2009, I was a speaker at the ICF Conference. It was my first ever presentation to this audience. I made a bold, brash, and risky statement: "If you are not using some kind of Journaling Process with your coaching clients, you are functioning at half-mast and you are ill-equipped as a coach." I heard the audience gasp and watched them as they shifted uncomfortably in their chairs. I made a stir. There was backlash and chatter. They were horrified and engaged all at the same time. Horrified, because no one is ever comfortable with the thought that they might be missing the boat, and engaged, because I was so willing to put my ass on the line that they were compelled to listen. This article is about the challenges of building a coaching practice, and how the use of a journaling platform can have a dramatically positive impact on improving your business success as a coach. Challenge 1: Coaching with Excellence Coaches with integrity put the following item at the top of their list of things to master and address: ensuring client results and satisfaction. They spend a lot of time in training and certification to make sure that their coaching skills are up to speed. The truth is that the only significant indicator of success is client endorsement. You are only a good coach if your clients say you are. So what do you need to do to be a phenomenal coach? You need to know your clients intimately. You need to understand their patterns of thought and behaviour. You need to get to the core of their beliefs and their values. You need to be able to identify the key beliefs that are standing in the way of their success, show them evidence of this barrier, and help them get past it, all with relative speed. What is the best way to get this done? Journaling. Provide your clients with journaling prompts and ask them to journal about the topic you have given them. Ask them to do this for the duration of the coaching period. The content that will surface as a result of this process will absolutely astonish you. It will provide you with insight that will enable you to get to the heart of your client's challenges instantly. By asking them relevant questions about the content of their journals, you will be able to detect patterns, trends and fundamental beliefs that they live and breathe by which inhibit their success. Coaching is largely dependent upon strong instincts. A coach who is able to read between the lines of a journal supplements his/her instincts 100 fold. With a journal, a good coach becomes a phenomenal coach and can provide the coaching client with concrete evidence of the thinking that creates challenges for them.
