Part 2 of a four part series by Janet Harvey, MCC
Live at Choice!
What does it mean to live at choice in your life? Part II Theme I: awareness comes before clarity "It is the unmanaged and limited nature of our personality that causes us stress, conflict and suffering in work and relationships. Thus, managing personal reactivity is fundamental to giving our work and personal lives meaning and fulfillment." - David Daniels, M.D. Stanford University Medical School, Author, An Essential Enneagram.
What inspired whisper did you hear from our last inquiry?[1] Call forward your learning now as we explore the first theme of the transformative process. Transformative coaching focuses attention upon awareness as the prerequisite to clarity. When we consciously add a focus upon awareness, clients tap into a new source of wholeness. They are able to access the essential self that up to that point they reverently didn't know. Ask yourself, "What happened for me as my awareness opened from the inquiry?" As Dr. Daniels suggests in the quote above, personal reactivity holds the seeds of our unhappiness simultaneously with our break through for fulfillment. Central to the transformative process is self observation. Said another way, we awaken and strengthen our ability to hear and be open to the whisper of the inner observer. Self observation is what leads to self-awareness. It must be consciously practiced. It is fundamental to managing personality so that the wholeness of a person manifests. When we remember that we are more than our personalities and habitual reactivity, self observation becomes a little easier. Discovering how much more we are than our personality and habitual reactivity helps energize and strengthen our muscle for listening within and to select choices from the inside-out. Art of Pause: be responsive, be centered and be in the present moment. Being responsive rather than reactive compels us to notice. Noticing is the beginning of self-observation. When we catch ourselves in a reaction, noticing fear, anxiety or uncertainty, as if teetering on the edge of a dangerously high cliff, we follow our first impulse to protect by stepping back. Instead of running away or being paralyzed with fright, try a new practice we call the art of pause. This may be as simple as briefly closing your eyes and allowing a deep breath. Or, if with another person, allowing silence for a moment so that you bring your attention to the body and your heart, followed by a request for a break. Both methods help us to be centered in our whole being. The art of pause generates space to listen within and puts the brakes on our habitual reaction. As we listen within, our inner observer helps us respond based upon what is most important. Strengthen the art of pause and experience more sustainability to be in the present moment. Listen to the wisdom within through the art of pause and see how your awareness deepens and expands for what is the essential and most important response to life. The inquiry we leave you with until next time is this: What strengthens my artfulness with pause so that I live at choice? [1] What unleashes my ability to reverently not know so that I hear the inspired whisper from life calling me to grow and change? About our expert: Janet M.
