Part 1: What is the difference between managing an organization and developing an organization?

Sponsored by:

Managing an organization can be a top down approach that has managers visualize what they would like their employees to do and then they “manage” their employees to follow through. In contrast, developing an organization is an integrated process where employers collaborate with employees to create vision and set goals for the organization. This development approach has everyone in the organization consider how he or she can better contribute to the greater success of the company.

When I hire a new employee in my company, I hire someone who has a skill set we need and a passion in an area that I think we have a weakness. I share some of my vision for how they might be able to contribute to our company and then I ask them to look around to tell me how their skill set might be a contribution to our organization. I then sit down with them over lunch at one month, three months, six months and one year to ask them how things are going. We talk about how they are doing, what resources they need from me and where they are being best utilized in the organization. .

A coach friend and mentor of mine, Virginia Kellogg, taught me the phrase “fully used” to describe that feeling someone has when all of their talents and passions are engaged by the work they are doing. She said, the most fulfilling work we do is when we are being “fully used.” I like to ask the people I work with how we can use their strengths, talents and passions to engage their interest and better our organization. These conversations then become part of our long term planning strategy and we are able to invest in specific skill development. This integrated approach to the development of our organization helps us find - and keep - people who are fulfilled, challenged and are giving the organization their best every day. .

Are the employees in your organization are being “fully used?”
How fulfilled are they in their work?
How can you implement a way to help people become more fully used? .
